We took the Turpins on a grand tour....of the local grocery stores, Tiger (kind of a dollar store) and Jysk (a housewares store). Besides just showing them how to negotiate shopping, paying and price-checking, we helped them look for some little Nisse men. They are as taken with them as we are.
Unfortunately, we didn't find them....everywhere we have looked, they are gone. We will go to some other shops later in the week to see if there are anymore available.
In the afternoon we went to the center. It was a few hours before any YSAs came. By 7:00, there were only 5 there plus Elder and Sister Turpin, SK and me. We were a bit concerned because none of the 5 were in charge of FHE, but by 7:15 we had about 17 there, including the FHE chairman and our intrepid leaders Morten and Lea.
We heard a marvelous message from a young returned missionary who had served in Greece. He told about a little orphaned-boy who received what we would hardly consider a gift, but to the little boy was an answer from Father in Heaven...because it was the very thing he had asked for. It was a sweet story about prayer and the answers that come....little experiences in the eyes of the world, but to the one receiving the answers they are miracles.
Then we wrote to the missionaries...all 19 of them! Tables were set up, paper and pens handed out, and everyone bent over rectangles of paper to write a Christmas message. I had put a couple of calligraphy markers in my purse a couple of weeks ago, and found them there tonight as I was looking for a pen, so I addressed the envelopes. That was fun....I hadn't done anything like that in a long long time.
We have had some wonderful visits with the Turpins today. They have wonderful testimonies...this is their second mission. Their expressions of faith are inspiring to me. They are very comfortable visiting with the YSAs and seemed to enjoy them so much this evening. They not only visit, but they both pick up on small cues about individuals who need a little extra attention. They are great people
One of our prime directives since arriving in Denmark has been to "love the young single adults." I have always thought that was an unnecessary to state because we have loved them since we first got here. But this last week, I have been frustrated with myself and wondering if we are doing anything of worth. I have been praying to know if we are doing enough.....but thinking there was no way to answer that one.
When our sweet young Gismo left last week, I hugged her to say goodbye, and she told me that we made her feel loved. That was a such a sweet answer to prayer. Such a small thing, but it meant so much to me.
You ABSOLUTELY DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!! I can tell from your letters and from seeing pictures of them with you two that there is a mutual love - and that is so important at this fragile time in their lives. You are great friends and examples.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you had a good FHE - finally - and that you have had an enjoyable time showing the Turpins around and visiting with them. L&P
Thanks so much. You are always such a positive voice in my life! L&P
DeleteOh Mom, I love to see your handwriting on envelopes. It's like hearing your voice. And when someone sees their name written like that, they feel so, so special.
ReplyDeleteWish you could have a George Bailey experience where you saw what things would be like without your influence. I'm positive you're radiating good things into so many lives. It will be a long time before you get to find out all the good you have done, but I'm sure someday you'll know!
I can tell you for certain that you're doing me good. Each afternoon when the girls are momentarily occupied, I take my phone and refresh "From Denmark with Love," the webpage that's been open in my browser for over a year, eagerly looking for a new post. I read it while I'm rocking Rebekah to sleep, or while I'm waiting for frozen veggies to finish in the microwave. And at night when I can't sleep I cup my phone in my hands and your blog is like a candle, giving off inspiration, cheer, and pleasant thoughts of my wonderful mom and dad doing their wonderful work on the other side of the world.
I love you!
Dear Lia,
DeleteHow your comments lift me! Thank you....... thank you...... thank you. You make my mundane posts sound like something wonderful. I love you!
Hear, hear Lia! I also have to agree with your sentiments! Reading your blog, Janis, is like a visit with you. And I love visiting with you. I know those YSA's are loved and I'll bet they love to be in your presence! You are wonderful! I know they feel it. Please know that you are loved from so far away. Not only are you blessing the lives of those YSAs but our lives as we read of your faith and experiences on a daily basis. I may not say it as eloquently as Lia, but my heart feels the same way. I don't have babies to rock to sleep or bathe, but I we all have things that make us feel weary. Know that your descriptions, photos, faith, and observances are a balm to a difficult day. I am so grateful you share your day with me every day. And that you are my friend! I love you. Hang in there!
ReplyDeleteYou are very eloquent! And thank you dear friend for your beautiful encouragement. I so appreciate you and love you and thank the Lord for your friendship.
