Hungry and Hot but Happy

Thursdays have taken on a whole new character.  When the Telfords were here, they reminded us that none of the senior couples in centers cook in the summer.  That reminder, coupled with a reminder that our budget is slim has spurred a decision not to cook.

It proved to be very wise, since it is very warm today and any kind of cooking in the kitchen would be oppressive....more than I could handle.  The high today ws 84 degrees with 75 % humidity.  That is pretty miserable....the only saving grace is a breeze that can nearly always be counted on to do some cooling --if you are in the shade.

We will not cook again until September when we are in the new center.  In the meantime, I am going to fix some kind of refreshment or dessert for after class  on Thursdays.  That will get us through the summer.  From what everyone has said, these temperatures will be with us through the middle to late August.  I am literally counting the days....every day I look at the 10-day forecast hoping to see temperatures back down in the 60's.

I know you will think I am crazy, but I actually missed cooking!  Not the cooking itself, but having something to eat here for the YSAs.  Some of the them didn't get the memo and were hungry.  We had ice cream after, but I wished I had something a little more nourishing for them here.

We had our district meeting today.  Our mission president keeps telling us that the work is hastening.  I know that is true.  Among the 6 young missionaries there, we have a good number of people who are being taught and who may be heading toward baptism.  I came away with notes of goals set for the coming week and a list of things to pray for - for each of the missionaries in our district.

Two of the them will be transferred on Monday, and it truly is sad to say good-bye.  These young people come into our district for a few weeks and just as we are getting to know them leave for a new assignment in Denmark.  Chances are good that we will see them again before they leave Denmark, but then again, we might never see them again in this life.

SK learned an old Danish saying when he was here 50 years ago:  "To meet and to part is the way of life."  As the years have rolled by, I find this is more and more true.  I have said goodbye to so many over the course of my life, and have welcomed many new friends along the way.

I taught the English lesson tonight in Institute.  It is enjoyable to teach....I love the preparation aspect of it and I love the interaction with the class members.  I wish I were a better teacher!!!!  Oh well....the important thing to remember is  that the Spirit  does the real teaching.

  1. You are right! The Spirit is the real teacher - and takes over if we do our part.
Maybe you could have some simple cold sandwiches for the YSA's on Thursdays - or maybe they will just get used to the fact that there will be nothing but refreshments.
I used to tell my students that they should be good to their families - because friends come and go - but families will always be there. Then the church started the "families are forever" slogan - so my instruction changed a little. Kids in the church knew where it came from (at least those that were active) - but others just took it as it was given. It's funny how little lessons came up that didn't really have much to do with subject matter that I taught - but the students seemed to learn from the little tidbits that came out of my mouth with no notice.
You are great examples to the YSA's and all that you meet. Hope Doris is doing well. L&P

  2. Such a great message for kids to hear over and over....families are soo important. I am certain they got the message. It is interesting how those message moments come...they are tender mercies when you feel that the Spirit has been there.

  3. I think that there are some missionaries who just seem to "stick out" more than others. We have the most spectacular set of sisters in our ward right now. Something about them is different from all the other ones we've had in our ward and the members have felt it!
