Thursday December 5, 2013
The day dawned (about 8:30 a.m.) dark and dreary and
dramatic. I received a call from one of
my favorite YSAs saying that the weather report said that the coming storm
today would be worse than the storm that came through about a month ago. So SK called our YSA Council President…who
made a few calls and then sent out the announcement that Institute is cancelled
this evening.
Not long after that we received a text that our Danish class
had been cancelled. It was kind of a
Eureka day for us….we suddenly had all kinds of time to work on stuff we have
been needing to do.
It has been a great day for us. We went first thing to the Center to put the
cream puff shells and lasagna in the freezer for next week (wow…that frees up
some time next week as well) then we came home and walked to several different
places on miscellaneous errands. The
wind is very strong and it has been raining all day, but we didn’t take the
Mary Poppins umbrella with us….even a windproof umbrella can’t stand up to this
kind of wind! (We discovered that
“windproof” means that when it gets turned inside out, it doesn’t break!...you
just have to turn it back outside out) We
got a lot accomplished.
We turned on our Christmas lights, put Mormon Tabernacle
Christmas music on and had a warm dinner.
We have been reading and studying ever since to the sound of the
wind…..and it is making a racket! It is
whistling, moaning and whining around the building. Occasionally we hear loud banging as though
something has come loose from a building somewhere. I’m sure that Hans Christian Andersen would
have loved it….more fodder for fairy tales!
The internet is still down.
I can’t even access the news to find out how bad the storm is. (We have a television but no cable. We can use it with a DVD player, which we may
do over Christmas break – it would be fun to watch a Christmas movie!
Pictures to follow!
Sounds like one of those days you want to wrap up with a cup of hot chocolate & the scriptures. I'm surprised you went out in all that. L&P
ReplyDeleteI haven't had hot chocolate yet! Thanks for reminding me of what a great treat that is. Maybe I'll fix it for the Center on the next bitter cold night.
DeleteI love the definition of "windproof"--ha! A storm day sounds kind of nice. It's like when you are feeling mildly sick and have to stay home, but realize that it's nice to cancel everything and be home! In this case, though, it's a storm. I've never had such a thing in sunny AZ!! :)
ReplyDeleteYes! Isn't that fun? It is just a little bonus...serendipity. You suddenly have time open up that you wanted and needed and there it is.
ReplyDeleteI never imagined we would have something like that here. From what everyone says there are none of nature's furies at work here as a rule. Then within 6 weeks, we've had 2 really awful weather days. Even so, I think the Danes just deal with whatever is happening outside and carry on. Remember all those hardy pioneers? A goodly number were Danish.
