Friday December 6, 2013 -- Hail for a Blustery Day!

Still no internet!  But we are so grateful to have this little telephone to stay connected with!  I have been writing my daily entries on WORD, and will transfer them to the blog as soon as we are online again.  In the meantime it's 25 degrees in Frederiksberg and snowing.  Brrrrr

Friday December 6, 2013

Throughout the night the wind raged around the building.  We were surprised at all the noise it made.  When the gray morning dawned it seemed like there should have been far more damage done than we could see. It hailed on and off.
We took the bus to our class where our teacher told us that Denmark has one mountain (he said facetiously) – it is actually a hill, but a very beautiful one surrounded by lakes and forests.  When you read Hans Christian Andersen you can see the love he had for this beautiful country.  Every time I look out at the lake with all of the swans and ducks I think of his little ugly duckling surviving the cold winter.
After class was over we went to the Center for several hours and came home on the bus.  Standing in the dark with the wind howling around us was COLD.  We were very grateful to get on the bus when it came.  SK is actually wearing the hood of his coat up, and has consented to get a scarf to go around his neck and a hat!!!!
I read several chapters from the Book of Mormon…I am trying to keep up with Elijah so that by January we will have finished it.  He is very faithful and is looking forward to going out to dinner with the missionaries to celebrate them all having read it in a couple of months.  I am pretty much on target if I read 4 chapters a day for a week and then 3.  SK has graciously consented to take me to dinner too.
I love reading it though, even and maybe even especially the war chapters.  I think Moroni and Teancum are fascinating men……far more heroic than any movie figure of today, and I hope to be able to meet them one day.
We walked over to a little restaurant with the Hansens – about 6 blocks and had a warm dinner together.  It is the first time we have really had a chance to visit with them.  They are a wonderful couple and so fun to visit with.  Brother Hansen grew up in Bountiful!!!! He was 3 years ahead of Stan in school and he is an artist.  He designed the Bountiful High logo….the Brave silhouetted against a Capital B.
He was at the airport to meet us the first day we arrived and was carrying around our 70-pound suitcases and hoisting them into the car like he was a 19-year-old elder!

When we came out of the restaurant, everything was blanketed in a layer of snow.  We walked home leaving a trail of footprints behind us.  We were mostly alone on the streets we walked down, the snow fresh and untouched, our breath coming in steamy puffs, and the muffled sounds of our conversation echoing off the old brick buildings
We have lived in a desert for 40 years, but I really don't mind this winter weather.  It all seems to be part of the charm of this place.

Pictures to follow when we get the internet!

  1. It's cold here too. I went up to Woodruff to check out the "new" home. It needs a LOT of work. Slowly - but surely! It was COLD & WINDY up there - but we kept warm with their new wood burning stove and sweat shirts. Keep warm and healthy! L&P

    1. They sound so amazing to me. They must be pioneer stock...the kind that would have made it through regardless of the challenges. Please give them my best and tell them I think they are wonderful!
