When in Copenhagen....

First thing this morning we took a walk down to the corner bakery.....a dangerous thing I know.  For the calories we consumed we probably should have walked 4 miles to get there and then perhaps it might not have been quite so dangerous.

We purchased a sandwich to share that was really excellent.  Then we each got a dessert...I think it doesn't get any better than this.

We also enrolled in a Danish class!  We were interviewed to see where we would best fit.  I was put in a beginning course.  The really funny thing is that SK was put in the same one as well.  Here he is going all over  Copenhagen and conversing with people in Danish, but he was put in the beginner's class!

The reason?  The man interviewing us asked him to write a brief paragraph about himself.  SK kind of hem-hawed around and then finally told the man something in Danish.  I asked him what he had said.  He told the man that he can't write Danish.  I said "What?"  "Do you mean your handwriting is so awful no one can read what it says?"
"No." SK responds.  "I can't write in the Danish language."  I giggled.  I couldn't believe it.

I still don't.  But because of that, he and I will be together in class.  It will be fun but intense.  It will be 3 hours a day four days a week.  We are expected to spend 1 to 2 hours on homework for each day we are in class.  This will probably be a 6 month commitment.  That is going to put a real time-crunch into our schedule.

A note about the Danish language....written is truly a different animal than spoken.  I don't know how many ways there are to spell the word Americans pronounce "lee."  And there is a different meaning for each one.  That is just the tip of the iceberg.  So lest you think SK is just trying to be the star of the beginning class, let me assure you that he really has never HAD to write in Danish, and so never really bothered to learn.

But won't it be nice to speak AND write the language of the this country?
