It was a pleasantly chilly today as we walked to our Danish class. It has been foggy too and I think fog is just too fun. You have to live in a place with very tall trees and old old buildings for fog to have the proper effect. Cacti and newly-built houses with tile roofs just don't quite make it. A nice touch is the old church bells that toll out a sad and short melody....as well as the nearly constant drizzle of rain.
Doris has been accepted to summer school at the university! I am so happy for her. She is excited to start the financial and business courses. She is keeping herself very busy with swimming and exercise classes, the Danish class and now these new classes. She really is happy again, and that is wonderful. Depression is so debilitating.
Tomorrow is shopping day....it comes around so fast!!!! I will be looking through all my cookbooks here to make my list. We have a full day with shopping and baking and going on visits with the young elders. We also have to go to a government building where we will get our fingerprints and pictures taken and sign documents which will be the final step of getting our visas renewed for the remainder of the time we will be here. You may recall that one of the big steps was to pass the infamous and dreaded language test.
I don't know how long all that will take, but we will need to be at the center for the Danish/English course taught by the missionaries by 6 or so. That is when I will try to get the baking done.
Now, what I am getting at....is that the next two days are going to be very busy with "The Meal" and all things related to it, and I have not as yet decided what food to take to the Danish class "Bring Some Food From Your Homeland to Share" day. I get the idea that cookies are always thought of as American....and Danes always like them. SK wants me to make the white chocolate chip cookies, and I could do that, but I am leaning towards the gingerbread cookies or the quintessential cookie: the chocolate chip cookies.
I have also thought it might be fun to take something that is not a dessert, but I can't think of anything that would be good after sitting for 2 hours. Besides, nearly everything I can think of has been borrowed from another country!....although there is always Indian Fry Bread, a uniquely American food. Naaaa....it wouldn't taste good at all after sitting that long.
Twinkies come to mind.
Our monthly planning meeting was held this evening at the center with our mission president, a member of the stake presidency, our high councilor, the director of our institute/seminary program in Denmark, the two co-chairmen of the YSAs, and us.
It is still very interesting to watch the interaction between each member of the council, and to listen. And I listen as attentively as possible. With the agenda in hand, and listening as closely as possible, I get the general idea of what is happening. I miss a lot, but I am happy to report that I get a lot too.
The calendar for the next 6 months is already full, so it will be grand trying to keep up with those amazing young people.
Do you know one thing I love about a meeting like that? My understanding of the language is marginal, but I understand the faith and testimony that are expressed. I feel the strength of their words and I can see in their faces what the Savior means to them. I understand their prayers and I love that too.
A brisk walk to the bus stop, a 10-minute wait shivering in the dark, and a couple of bus rides to our apartment got us home before 10!
We'll get to bed before midnight! I'll have plenty to think about while I am drifting off to sleep.
Italians were fascinated by American cookies and pie. I used to think potato salad was an original American dish, but then my Italian companion made "Russian salad"...and it was potato salad! Cornbread is traditional American, isn't it? Or cheesecake bites. But really, nothing is more classic than chocolate chip cookies. How could you go wrong with that? Low stress, too!
ReplyDeleteYou are right! Chocolate Chip Cookies it is by unanimous comments! The potato salad is funny. I hear from so many returned missionaries in the states and Danes here that buying anything from a bakery in the States that says "Danish" is basically a joke. I know that is true.
DeleteYou paint a beautiful picture of the fog!
ReplyDeleteThat is wonderful news about Doris! Happy to hear it.
So are you saying that the Dane's don't have cookies of any variety? I know they have incredible pastries but no cookies? What a travesty! It would be a sad world without cookies.
I'm with Lia! Go for the chocolate chip cookies! And let's be honest....who wouldn't want dessert?
It is really interesting. Some bakeries have cookies, but they look kind of boring, and they are usually on a little shelf all by themselves. And I can't imagine who would look at them twice with the splendid bakery treats next to them.
DeleteYes...indeed. I would be quite sad if there were no cookies.
Chocolate Chip Cookies it is!
The more you talk about that beautiful place with its old buildings, rain, fog, etc. - the more I could see you wanting to go back. The second time - you could be free of all the cooking stuff. Didn't we retire from that?? Me either! The regular choc. chip cookies sound good to me. White chocolate - just isn't chocolate!
ReplyDeleteSure is good to hear that Doris is doing better. What about Melba? Hope she is good too.
Make "the MEAL" easy. Spaghetti, Mexican Casserole, chili, stew, bean & bacon soup, bread sticks with the soup things (roll the dough out, cut in strips, spread w/butter,raise, bake - SO easy.) Or buy the bread (even easier). That would be on my "trying to sleep" mind too. Take care & know you are loved! L&P
I KNOW I'll want to come back, but I can't imagine that I will be able to pull myself away for that long again. Lia's new little one will be born within a month, and I won't see her before she is nearly a year and a half old. Our oldest granddaughter wasn't sixteen when we left, and she already looks much older.
ReplyDeleteI took your advice. We're making soup tomorrow with chocolate chip cookies (thanks for your vote...three out of three...it is a sign!) for dessert. We found grapes at a great price, so that will round out the meal. I hope it is as simple as it sounds.
