Danish class is stepping up! The drills they run us through each day are more intense and the homework is multiplying. When we started, we were told that an hour a day is recommended, but even SK couldn't get through it in an hour. If we were to do it right, it would take at least 2, and there is no time to do it right!
We are planning on quitting sometime in May. It is taking too much of my time and focus and I am sure that I could do just as well, if not better, but studying with SK on my own. As it is, I think it is a distraction now, and not necessarily a benefit to our mission. I will miss all of the class members...my life has been greatly enlarged by getting to know so many from so many different parts of the world.
I am writing from the center. It is nearly midnight, and I think we will probably be here for at least another hour....and I wouldn't be surprised if it were longer. They are having a great time. I love to listen to them. When I want to practice my Danish, I listen intently, otherwise....it mostly goes over my head. I know there is a point at which I will begin to hear it like I hear English...without thinking and without translating in my head....at least I hope so. I can see that it is a gradual process, at least for me.
Our soup, salad and cookie dinner was a success. It was simple, and while it took the better part of my afternoon/evening, it was not stressful. YSAs came in every now and then to help or visit, so it was very pleasant. I sat at a table in the kitchen with four of them and laughed along with them. They are so fun, and they love to laugh.
At another time, I went into the office and visited with a young man about my talk on Sunday...he is an incredible translator. While I was in there with him, someone (not SK) cleared up the dishes and started the dishwasher! I love these kids....oops, I am not supposed to call them kids. Hey! I call my 42-year-old son a kid.
Another Thursday gone. It has been good. These weeks are speeding by. Tomorrow, Tivoli will open after being closed for nearly 3 1/2 months. It closed on New Year's Day. I remember thinking that April 10 was such a long time away, and suddenly it is here. Saturday is the 6-month mark of our being in Denmark.
It has been an amazing 6 months.
I wasn't going to point out your "bump day", but since you did...that's exciting!! I'm glad the soup/salad day went well. What's not to like about that? What kind of soup did you make?! You should make that chicken tortilla. That's my favorite, and all ingredients are easy except beans. Plus it makes a lot.
ReplyDeleteI think to think of you guys laughing with the "kids" in Denmark. I hope they know how good they've got it!!
We made white chicken chili soup with the precious white chicken chili seasoning! We found large cans of canned white and black beans. What a eureka moment. So it was low key....for which I am quite grateful.
ReplyDeleteSounds great - as usual. Staying up into the wee hours of the morning is getting to be a habit with you - but as long as you enjoy the "company" - guess it is ok.

It is getting to be a habit, but one I would love to break! Actually, I have always been a night person, so this isn't as hard for me as it might be for others, but I am tired! And I adore the company!
