Haircuts Are Us - or - SK Reinvents Himself

They say that the difference between a good and bad haircut is about 2 weeks.  Well, it has been over 2 months, and I am finally getting comfortable with this haircut.  The worst part was the little overhang of hair in the back with what SK kindly referred to as a beaver tail hanging below that.

Today I asked him to cut the beaver tail off.  He took the scissors in hand with great confidence, and then he began cutting.  This was truly a test of faith, even though he speaks my language.

He examined it carefully, took another snip here and another one there and then pronounced it good....and it was!  What a man.

We have decided on a simplified menu for tomorrow...soup, green salad, grapes and cookies.  SK oversaw the making of White Chocolate Almond cookies, his favorite.  We made enough for the center and the Danish class.  I also made -by popular vote (Lia, Erin, Judy) the quintessential American food, Chocolate Chip Cookies.  Actually I made the dough, and it is in the refrigerator at the center.  I will bake a few dozen for dinner tomorrow night and Friday morning, I will bake the rest to take to Danish class.  That is a good thing done.

I am enjoying preparing for my talk, and hope to be ready by Sunday morning.  I am working on pronunciation....but I don't know just exactly how bad I sound.  There is a language lab at school which I ought to go to more often.  You listen to the dialogue, repeating after each sentence.  The teacher in the lab corrects when necessary, and then you listen to the replay.  That is amazingly helpful.

I sometimes look at SK and marvel at he and so many others did it.  He came to Denmark as a 19-year old with no language training whatsoever.  He had a senior companion who studied with him daily, but other than that, with no high-tech computer programs, no Danish native-speakers, and no formal class, he learned to speak Danish well.  Well enough that he is still able to converse with most Danes.

We went to the Immigration Office today and were fingerprinted, photographed and given something to sign.  I guess we're staying!  Everything is now in order, our visas have been extended and we've been "approved."

Today, SK went with 2 young elders and taught a woman and her adult daughter.  They seemed a little resistant to making a return appointment.  SK bore his testimony (in Danish) about the Book of Mormon and the Plan of Salvation, and they set a date for another appointment!

At age 70, SK could actually launch himself in any of several directions after the mission....haircutter, cookie baker, teacher.  I could add a few more to that list.

He is a great senior companion, and he is an amazing guy.

It was very windy today which made it seem much colder....obviously the ducks thought so....see how choppy the water was....with no little fowl bobbing on the surface.

The view from the center shows a lovely dramatic sky...the clouds here move so quickly it makes you dizzy to stare for long.

  1. What a man! Who knew? It turned out much better than Derek's story from his mission of a hair cut!

Let us know what people think of the cookies!

I'm glad you've decided to give your talk in Danish. It will be wonderful and surely--just as you've experienced in your meetings--if they can't quite understand everything, they will at least understand your spirit!

    Love you!

    1. Yes...I thought about Derek's stories as your dad began snipping away. I hope you are right about the spirit. I am still working on it. We'll see how much actually will be given in Danish by Sunday a.m.
      Love you.

  3. It's amazing what talents we are finding in our spouses as well as ourselves as we serve these missions, isn't it! SK did a great job. Your hair looks wonderful.
Did you happen to catch the LDS living article today on Denmark? If not, here's the link: http://www.ldsliving.com/story/75494-5-things-to-know-about-the-church-in-denmark

  4. Thanks Debbie. I had heard about it, but couldn't find it online. I was happy to have the link. I am enjoying your blogs...Jamaica and Denmark are certainly different missions, but the work and the pay is very similar. :-)
Yes...it is amazing! Missions are wonderful.

  5. Ditto on the haircut! Good job Stan! Sounds like things went well with all of the cookies, soup, etc. - as always. You do so well.
Your "Danish" talk will be amazing because you will have the Lord's help - and you will radiate His Spirit. L&P

  6. My Dear Friend,

I so hope you are correct. I hope the Lord WILL help me and help the branch members to understand me. And I hope they don't fall asleep on me.

    Love you!
