SK loaded the car this morning with all kinds of stuff.....rice cookers, slow cooker, pans of brownies, cans of beans, 50 to 60 tomatoes, huge cans of black beans....onions, garlic, tongs...and on. It was drizzling as he carried everything out.
We picked up another sister who lives by the temple, and then continued on to the stake center. We worked from 8 a.m. til noon to get the lunch on, and just barely made it by the 1:00 deadline. I was blessed to be able to work with several other sisters who are hard workers and who were an enormous help.
By noon tables were set and food was on the serving table. The missionaries were adorable and so grateful for lunch. So many of them love Cafe Rio and were excited to have it again.
We had brownie sundaes for dessert, and then worked to return the kitchen to its pre-lunch order and tidiness.
Then we went back to the conference for nearly 3 hours more. I enjoyed it ....and was reminded, once again of how good these young people are. They taught the lessons in most of the training sessions, and their maturity and the power of their messages were amazing. I know these young people are not perfect, but compare any one of them straight across with any other 20-year old, it is plain to see that they are remarkable.
Sister Sederholm gave a beautiful presentation which ended with a video of many photos that cover their 3 years here serving as mission president. Both she and her husband were emotional since this will be their last zone conference here. They will be on a plane for their home in the states in less than a month.
President Sederholm spoke last and was gentle and loving as he spoke about this mission, about the responsibilities of being workers in the vineyard. He left us with a few challenges and much encouragement. He is a great man and I have enjoyed serving with him and his wife.
SK, Melissa and Derek and I went out to a cute little cafe where the food is wonderfully authentic Danish.....and oh so good. Meat and potatoes. It may sound a little boring to you, but it was delightful.
We came in and (wonder of wonders) had some Danish pastry while we played Nines.
Melissa gave my feet a little massage....which helped....but now I am heading off to bed. That will help too.
It was a marvelous day....and tomorrow will be as well....except we have to say goodbye to Melissa and Derek.
I don't like good-byes. But it has been glorious to show them around here. And they loved it!
What a great conference. So glad you had extra help with the food - and that it was well received. Time for Melissa & Derek to leave came SO FAST! It won't be that long and you will see all of your family again. Endure well - and take care of those feet! L&P
ReplyDeleteYes, EVERYTHING is coming fast! Someone mentioned something that happened in February. It seems like it was last week. I realized with a sinking heart that it was 3 months ago, and we have less than 3 months to go.
DeleteI'm sure they were so happy to have some familiar food from home! It's funny when you consider what we call (very loosely) "Mexican" food is really "American" food to the missionaries now!
ReplyDeleteI'm excited to hear about Melissa and Derek's trip and see the pictures! I'm surprised that it was so cold for them. Will we even need a sweatshirt when we come in July?
That is kind of funny! It definitely has become an American standby.
ReplyDeleteThe temperature today was 17 Celsiusaround (62)....and sunny. It was beautiful but the wind was really chilly. I had a coat on and was most grateful for it. Melissa too. Derek M brought a lightweight jacket but will want something warmer I think. It will probably get warmer and warmer.....most of the YSAs tell me that July and August are usually pretty warm, getting up to 25 C. (77) Sweatshirts and lightweight raincoats would be good.....and then you can always layer them!
