We will be flying out at that time of day on August 29. Note to self: get there in plenty of time to stand in long lines.
Carolyn and Rori did not look worse for wear....they looked bright and ready to go....not like people who had been in the air for the previous 12 1/2 hours. We took the train back to the Copenhagen central train station, then walked home taking a short detour down the lake path by our apartment.
After a light breakfast (of Danish pastry - of course, and fruit) we headed out walking. We went to the Thorvaldsen Museum....which was wonderful. I love that place....his sculptures touch my heart. There is a hauntingly lovely relief of an angel in flight gently cradling two very small children on her shoulders. Every time I have looked at it, I have thought she was taking them to Heaven....and found it to be sad and sweet.
This time, I looked at the card telling about the work, and discovered that the angel represents night (the owl to her side is a symbol for night) (as the angel across the same museum room represents day). She is cradling them to sleep. Isn't that beautiful?
From that point, we walked along Stroget, continuing to NyHavn, took the harbor boat tour and then meandered back down Stroget, stopping in stores of interest and doing a lot of window shopping, ending up at the Church of Our Lady to admire the Christus and Twelve Apostles in their final and magnificent forms. Both Carolyn and Rori made it through the very long day of sight-seeing and marathon walking better than I did! I am ready to drop....my little Fitbit tells me that we walked nearly 8 miles and walked up 20 flights of stairs.
We walked in the beautiful clear sunlight, in the gray of an overcast day, in warmth, in chill, in strong winds, in light rain....and in a downpour. Denmark put on quite a show today for them.....giving them nearly everything but snow! It was magnificent.
And now, we will be lulled to sleep by the sound of the wind in the trees and an occasional pitter patter of rain.
And perhaps an angel soothing us to slumber....
I love that explanation about the angel!! Sounds like a marvelous day. That's a lot to accomplish in just one day!
ReplyDeleteYes....it was a great day. Love you!
DeleteLoved the angel of the night. You had a VERY busy - but good day. Glad your sis-in-law and niece were able to keep up. Maybe they rest on airplanes better than most. Have a wonderful time with them! L&P
ReplyDeleteI am not sure what their secret is, but I wish I had their energy!
