Recommitting....

Never one to start my New Year's resolutions on New Year's Day....I began today.  Let it here be noted that I carried through today with them.  (#1 exercise) I began my day with a brisk 2-mile walk around the lakes.  I left SK snoozing....he had been awake on and off during the night.  I left a crockpot of nourishing split-pea soup bubbling on the stove. (#2 healthy eating)

I said hello to our swan couple and the teen-aged swan who still has pale brown on his someday-to-be snowy white feathers.  I passed many kids on their way to school, runners, walkers, bikers and even a few old ladies like me out for a good walk.  The skies were a dramatic black and gray with patches of light....which totally gave way to dark skies by 2 in the afternoon.  The temperature was in the 30's with a slight breeze.  I had my coat, gloves and scarf on and it felt glorious!

SK and I did a little shopping so that I can fix lunch tomorrow for the Danish class.  Zucchini soup....I know it doesn't sound that good, but it really is....honestly!  I thought it would be fun to introduce it here, since zucchini here and all other ingredients are sooo good.

I studied the scriptures this morning, and spent time studying Danish....yes....it felt good. (#3 and #4 study in the morning so nothing interferes).  I am batting a thousand so far on the resolutions.

In the evening we went to a little Turkish restaurant across the street (SK thought it was marvelous...it saved him from having to eat split pea soup!) with President and Sister Sederholm, Elder and Sister Hicks, Elder and Sister Thorne, Sister Hamblin and Daniel....one of our great young men from YSAs.  He has been close to the Hicks and came to be with us because they will be leaving for their home in the USA on Friday.

About 2 years ago, when both they and we had our mission calls to Denmark, they came to visit us.  Elder Hicks was here on a mission about 50 years ago and has been bringing back small groups of people interested in family history that is traced back to Denmark.  He customizes their trip to include a few of the major tourist sites plus the cities and villages of their ancestral homes.  That sounds like a dream come true.  For a Latter-day Saint, Denmark is a treasure.  I adore Denmark and as far as I know have absolutely no ancestral ties to it whatsoever......my forefathers all came from the British Isles.

In some ways, it seems like 10 years ago, and others as though it was just last summer.  Time...always a mystery to me.  The Hicks have been here 18 months and are looking forward to being with their family.  I was thinking about our family as I walked this morning (as I often do) and I have to catch myself not to think about them too much before I get homesick.

Onward ever onward....the next 8 months will be the best of our mission!...especially if I can keep those resolutions.

  1. Impressive! We made our resolutions last night. Mine are similar to yours! The first one David had was to touch the ceiling...it may be a few years on that one. :)

  2. Yes! Very impressive indeed! Since I never keep them - I don't bother anymore - but I should!! I do set goals and try to achieve them - but they are generally MUCH shorter term than a year. Keep up the good work. The split pea soup sounds yummy! L&P

    1. My goals invariably fall short of a year, but I am generally realistic about being able to keep them. But I figure if I carry through with lofty ambitions even for a few days, I am better off by a little bit than before. We'll see. It was yellow split pea soup and it just wasn't that great....but I am sure the nutrition is still there! L&P
