No self-respecting missionary would possibly take up space in their return-home-suitcase for things like bath towels, food processors (with a Danish plug), printers, sheets, floor rugs, old walking shoes, thick fluffy robes, and (if you live in Arizona) winter coats and boots. I will take home still-wearable clothing and all-things-precious-to-me-that-remind-me of these 23 months in Copenhagen.
We purchased some sweet little Christmas decorations last year and this year - which will make the trip across the ocean. We have also bought a few little souvenirs that we particularly enjoy....and I hope to get a couple more things that have meaning to us.
We went to a loppemarket today about a 10 minute walk from here in a place called the Forum....where a lot of big names have performed. It is a huge convention-center type place. The loppemarket is kind of like a garage sale, kind of like a dealer's closeout sale. There were booths everywhere and we wound our way through the whole building....it took nearly 3 hours. By the time we were done, we felt like we had walked a marathon. What is it about shopping?
We were looking for a little painting of some sort that would say to us "Denmark." We found a painting and an etching, neither of which would qualify as great art, but they fulfill our requirements and our budget! Together they cost 150 kroners, which is about 25 to 30 dollars.
See the tall Lego-like church! in each one? They are so charming |
We carried our prizes home happy with our finds.
We spent the evening preparing for the Sabbath. We truly look forward to Sundays here. White shirts to iron and lessons to read. Tonight while I ironed, I listed to talks by Julie B. Beck. She really is an incredible woman. She gave a magnificent talk recommended by Erin titled "The Theology of the Family." It is outstanding, and deserves more than one reading, which is why I printed it up!
We awakened this morning to the plip plop of large raindrops hittting the surfaces outside our windows....tonight we go to sleep to the sounds of the last of the New Year's fireworks. Even strangers have wished us "Happy New Year!" The Danes are such lovely people....and they certainly enjoy celebrating.....who doesn't?
Celebrating the Sabbath is the best.
I think both of those pictures are absolutely wonderful and remind ME of Denmark! I remember seeing many white churches with the "lego brick" top. Since Legos were developed in Denmark I wonder if there's any relation? The Forum looks like sooooo much fun! Exercise and shopping--what a pairing!! The Goose Girl is darling as well! Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteI'll check on it....perhaps the originator of Legos looked at those churches and thought "Eureka!" It was all fun. The Forum does that a couple of times a year and in the winter it is very nice to be indoors.
DeleteFun day- with some great "finds". Saturday is a special day- it's a day to get ready for Sunday. Remember that little Primary song? It is so true! L&P
ReplyDeleteYes....I was thinking of that cute little song when I put that title on. There is so much wisdom in those children's songs. It is surprising to me how often lines from songs run through my mind.....no wonder our Primary people work so hard to teach little ones those wonderful hymns. L&P
