Great Men.....

SK and I were pretty tired by today....we have been getting up much earlier than usual and going strong until we drop into bed around midnight or later.  So we slept in and it felt good.

It was a stay-at-home day until 3 when we went to the center.  So we enjoyed relaxing a little bit by doing laundry, cleaning and getting some more things ready to pack.  Some of those things cause a bit of puzzling as we try to decided if it is worth it to take home or replace in Arizona.  Case in point:  a winter coat.  We will be traveling into snow country in the near future.

At the center, we spent time before institute visiting with several YSAs....so cute...so full of enthusiasm.....and so wise in many ways.  We have some who take public transportation for up to and sometimes over an hour and a half to get to the center, and then have to turn and around and do the same to go home.  That is a sacrifice, and I always hope they feel rewarded by being there.  When Jens teaches, I know they do.  Jens has a way of asking questions that make you think, and you have to turn them around in your head and apply it to yourself in order to answer.

They must have felt rewarded tonight as well.  Jonathan, a YSA taught.  He is a tall young blonde who recently returned from his mission in France.  If you have read any of my other posts, you may remember that he loves indexing...his father introduced him to Family History when he was 12, and he is very good at it.  He is also the one who manages to teach me something every time I see him.

His interests are broad-ranging and he is a man of many abilities....and often, just in passing, he will share something new he has just come across....and it is new to me!  That is always fun.  He taught a lesson about Heber J. Grant, and did a great job of getting people to thoughtfully answer questions and comment.  I always think learning about great men and women of history is interesting.

Heber J. Grant is known (among other things) for his persistence.  I admire that, because that is a quality I am lacking.  I think it is a great thing to be known - even after you are dead - by a strong character trait....a good one....a virtuous one.

Thomas Carlyle said, "Great men taken up in any way, are profitable company."

Both living and dead.....I know that is true.

  1. Great young people. Enjoy them while you can. Yes! We can learn much from lives of good people. Heber J. Grant was the prophet when I was born - and for a few years after. I remember hearing his powerful voice on the radio as we listened to conference. Don't remember what he said - just his voice. I would bring the winter gear home if you are going to be using it here. In the mean time - what is left of it - ENJOY! L&P

  2. So interesting. His picture doesn't look like someone with a strong voice. I think it is wise to bring the coat home....replacement costs are great. L&P
